COUNCIL MEMBER FEATURE
The St. Lawrence-Rideau Immigration Partnership is a coalition of organizations committed to building local capacity to attract, settle, and integrate immigrants. The Immigration Partnership also encourages organizations, individuals, and communities to recognize and celebrate cultural diversity. Lead by two staff members, and representatives from 25+ community agencies, the Immigration Partnership works throughout the 10 municipalities and 3 partner communities that make up the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.
Established in 2010, the Immirgatuion Partnership is funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, and is one of seventy-seven Immigration Partnerships across Canada.
WHAT WE DO
Immigrants
We refer immigrants to local services
Local Residents
We involved Leeds Grenville communities in welcoming newcomers to the area.
Businesses
We support employers in developing and maintaining culturally diverse workforces.
Community Agencies & Service Providers
We raise awareness of local and regional immigrant support resources. We support immigration and cultural diversity themed initiatives.
We identify immigrant needs and develop community-based plans to address them.
WHO WE ARE
Program Manager, Melissa Francis (Left):
After many years in a variety of Parks Canada positions, I joined the Immigration Partnership in 2012. International travel and personal experience with the federal immigration visa system sparked my interest in the Partnership. I continue to be amazed by how many local folks care about newcomers to Canada and the recognition of cultural diversity in the area.
After much travel abroad to New Zealand, Australia and many African countries, I have happily settled in Front of Yonge. I take full advantage of my proximity to the St. Lawrence River, 1000 Islands Parkway bike path and parks by spending as much time outdoors as possible. I am also a yoga teacher and although COVID has put a pause on my teaching, I hope to resume soon.
Projects Coordinator, Lauren Smith (Right):
I'm a born Brockvillian, currently living in Lyn with my family. I've held a variety of positions over the years (everything from teaching English in Japan to supervising tour guides to working on a cruise ship) and have a bit of wanderlust over the years, leading me to travel extensively and even to live abroad in two countries and visit many more.
I can speak understandable French and Japanese with terrible grammar, and have a love of all things nerdy. I love learning new recipes, new cultures, and new things in general. When not at work, I can be found being mauled by my daughters, writing, and most recently, playing Dungeons and Dragons.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
DID YOU KNOW?
In the late 1700s, the site of the Blue Church was already being used as a burial ground.
A town was planned for the area around the burial ground and was to be called New Oswegatchie. The church was supposed to be built in 1790, but it's unclear when the church was erected, with only a note in one of the local papers mentioning that it was built in 1809 and named for the colour it was painted.

WHAT'S NEW
Leeds and Grenville Immigration Strategy Refresh
The St. Lawrence – Rideau Immigration Partnership has been working on a refresh of the Leeds and Grenville Immigration Strategy to be finalized in April 2022. The Strategy will provide direction on how local agencies, individuals, and communities can participate in creating a welcoming region for immigrants. Labour market challenges, the recent arrival of many newcomer refugees, and additional federal immigration streams are a few factors being considered as the Strategy is refreshed. Surveys and consultations have been ongoing through January and February 2022.
As a thank you to our participants, several gift cards to local immigrant-owned businesses were offered as door prizes for those who shared their thoughts. These gift cards were to El Rebost de les Mil Iles in Prescott, Panache Bakery in Gananoque, and Sunset Grill in Brockville.
The community consultations have seen participation from people in every municipality within in Leeds and Grenville and has included municipal representatives, interested citizens, social service agencies, immigrants, and educational institutions.
Loretta Corbeil, a local consultant, who has a background in immigration, program evaluation, and equity and diversity programs has been hired to lead this refresh. If you have any comments, questions, or wish to receive a copy of the finalized strategy, please contact Lauren/Melissa at the Immigration Partnership (lauren@eecentre.com/melissaf@eecentre.com).
